Before using any generative AI tool in your coursework, please confirm with your professor that using content produced by an AI tool is acceptable before citing it. Your professor may also have a specific way they would like you to reference the AI tool.
Generative AI is a relatively new technology. Because of this, citation styles may lack specific guidelines for referencing AI-generated content. Guidelines are being changed and updated regularly as the technology evolves. Check for the most recent recommendations before starting your work. Always err on the side of transparency if you use an AI tool. Here are some ways to cite generative AI responsibly:
APA has provided guidance for citing responses from ChatGPT or output from other generative AI tools.
Include a description of the prompt when quoting output from a generative AI tool in your paper. Use the author of the AI algorithm or the company who produced the tool in both the in-text citation and full reference citation. It is recommended to include the chat transcript as an appendix to your project.
Format:
Author. (Date). Name of tool (Version of tool) [Large language model]. URL
Example:
OpenAI. (2023). ChatGPT (Mar 14 version) [Large language model]. https://chat.openai.com/chat
In-Text Citation Example:
(OpenAI, 2023)
Narrative Citation:
OpenAI (2023)
MLA has provided guidance for citing responses from ChatGPT or output from other generative AI tools.
MLA does not recommend putting the AI tool as the author. For title of the source, describe what was generated by the AI tool. Use the Title of Container element to name the AI tool (e.g., ChatGPT). Name the specific version of the AI tool (e.g., ChatGPT-4o). For the publisher field, use the name of the company who produced the tool. For the date, provide the date the content was generated. For the Location field, give the stable, shareable URL for the prompt and generated content.
Format:
"Text of prompt" prompt. Name of tool, version, Company of Tool, Day Month Year, URL for generated content.
Example:
"Describe the theme of nature in Jane Austen's Mansfield Park" prompt. ChatGPT, model GPT-4o OpenAI, 23 Sept. 2024, chatgpt.com/share/66f1b0a0-d704-8000-be9a-85f53c850607.
In-Text Citation Example:
("Describe the theme")
The Chicago Manual of Style has provided guidance for citing responses from ChatGPT or output from other generative AI tools:
Recommendations on how to cite AI-generated content.
For most types of writing, acknowledge the AI tool in your text (e.g., The following recipe for pizza dough was generated by ChatGPT"). For more formal citations in a paper, Chicago style recommends citing ChatGPT in a Chicago footnote.
Format:
1. Text generated by Name of tool, Company of Tool, Month Day, Year, Tool URL.
Example:
1. Text generated by ChatGPT, OpenAI, March 23, 2024, https://chat.openai.com/chat.
If the prompt has not been included in the text, it can be included in the note.
Format:
1. Name of tool, response to "Text of Prompt," Company of Tool, Month Day, Year.
Example:
1. ChatGPT, response to "Explain how to make pizza dough from common household ingredients," OpenAI, March 23, 2024.
